Native Winds specializes in teaching materials and books for children, K-12. We also carry many craft books and have a growing selection of novels and history books for adult readers. We focus on books authored or co-authored by native people so that the primary source of information comes from within the culture. We have a discount program for teachers, and we accept purchase orders from schools and libraries. We are an authorized vender for the Department of Education of the State of Hawai'i.

Although our collection is continually expanding, we can mail you a book list that is representative of our selection. We can special order titles, which are not currently in stock. Please feel free to contact us at (808) 734-8018 or send an email message.

  • The Arrow Over the Door, by Joseph Bruchac (hc $15.99). Ages 7 - 10. Told in alternating viewpoints of two boys, the story is based upon a historical meeting of Quakers and Indians during the Revolutionary War. Written with the warmth and detail for which Bruchac is well-known, this fast-paced and moving story reminds us that "the way of peace" can be walked by all human beings.

  • Grandmother Spider Brings The Sun, Geri Keams (pb $7.95). A personal favorite and probably the best-seller of our children's books, this Cherokee tale is retold with warmth and wit and is accompanied by captivating illustrations.

  • The Traditional Northern Dancer, C. Scott Evans (pb $9.95). Clear and concise instructions for making every piece of your traditional outfit. Wonderful color photographs! (Also available: The Modern Fancy Dancer [pb $15.95], profusely illustrated with wonderful color photographs!)

  • Whispering Winds Craft Annuals, Volumes 2 through 6 (pb $7.00). Each volume is a wonderful resource with clear instructions and inspirational photographs of beadwork, dolls, shawls, dance regalia and more.

  • Spirits Dark & Light: Supernatural Tales from the Five Civilized Tribes, by Tim Tingle, (hc $15.95).  From the book flap: "In the Native American tradition, a strong connection exists between the spirit world and the natural world. What happens in one has direct and often reciprocal impact on the other. In this collection, Choctaw storyteller Tim Tingle draws from the rich heritage of the Five Civilized Tribes--the Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Seminole nations--and brings tales from the spirit world into our world....These spine-tingling stories not only entertain but provide a window into the native customs and beliefs of these still-vital communities...Owls, rabbits, deer, eagles--all of these spirits and more are here, shifting shapes in dizzying sequence and illuminating the values, beliefs, hopes and fears still embraced by the Five Civilized Tribes."
